LED LIGHTING & SIGNALLING

ADVANTAGES OF LED AS A LIGHT SOURCE OVER CONVENTIONAL ONES

·         The colour Rendering index is around 80 which gives a very natural feel.

·         LEDs produce more Lumens per watt than do incandescent bulbs, FTL or even CFL , HID Lamps. Almost all the energy given to LED is converted into LIGHT of the intended colour unlike the other light source wherein most of it is converted to heat.

·         The solid package of an LED with built-in or external lens can be chosen to focus its light, Thus  a directional pure light. There is no light pollution, spillage thus the usable light is the highest in case of LEDs.

·         The power consumption for equivalent illumation with the present LED available is in the ratio 1: 25 for unidirectional lighting. With wider distribution angle LED the dispersed lighting can also be around more than 1: 5 as compared to the CFL as well.

·         In spite of the voltage drops there is no significant change in the light output. Thus it is ideal source of light for wide input voltage or long lighting circuits where there is voltage drop at extremes.

·         LEDs light up very quickly, A typical LED will achieve full brightness in microseconds thus ideal for open area lighting where immediate illumination is a must. LEDs full illumination & switch off – on is literally instantaneous thus it can be used in applications that are subject to frequent on-off cycling, unlike fluorescent lamps or conventional lamp.

·         LEDs, being solid state components, are difficult to damage with external shock, or VIBRATIONS. Fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, HID Lamps are easily broken by shocks. Thus ideal for mining operations where there is blast vibrations.

·         LEDs have an extremely long life span. The manufacturer calculated the ETTF (Estimated Time To Failure) for their LEDs to be between 100,000 and more with more than 85% rated maintenance. Fluorescent tubes , HID Lamps typically are rated at about 30,000 hours, and incandescent light bulbs at 1,000-2,000 hours.

·         LEDs can be very small and are easily populated onto printed circuit boards for high wattage configuration.

·         LEDs do not contain mercury, while compact fluorescent lamps other HID Lamps, do thus more ECO-FRIENDLY. The heat generation in LED is the least as compared to incandescent lamp or Fluorescent , HID Lamps, thus more ECO-FRIENDLY.

·         LED  light source and fitting does not contain any type of ballast, ignitor, condenser makes the fitting completely maintenance free.

Thus considering the extremely long trouble free life and the energy and maintenance costs over longer period LED lighting surpass incandescent, CFL as well is HID Lamps in effectiveness.

FEATURES OF FILAMENT LAMP , FLUORESCENT & HID LAMPS

Incandescent Bulbs / Filament Lamps

100-year-old Inefficient Light Technology

Incandescent bulbs use a 100-year-old technology that generates light by passing a large amount of electrical current through a small wire. This wire glows white-hot (almost) and radiates energy in all directions. A consequence of this method of generating light is that only 15% of the energy produced is visible light; the remaining 85% is dissipated as heat!

Compact Fluorescent Lamps

Convenient, but Fragile, Complex and Environmentally Hazardous

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were developed as a relatively efficient alternative to incandescent bulbs and many solar-powered outdoor lighting products utilize these lamps as their light source.

In short, fluorescent lamp technology consists of a thin glass tube filled with argon/mercury vapor. At each end of the tube are metal electrodes coated with an alkaline-earth oxide that gives off electrons easily. When a current is passed through the ionized gas between the electrodes, the fluorescent lamp emits ultraviolet radiation. The inside surface of the fluorescent tube is coated with phosphors, typically zinc silicate or magnesium tungstate. These phosphors absorb the ultraviolet radiation and re-radiate the energy as visible light. A fluorescent lamp will operate until the alkaline-earth oxide coating on its electrodes is depleted.

When starting a fluorescent lamp, the unit requires a "boost" in the form of a starter and ballast that provide up to four times the operating voltage in the beginning.

Disadvantages of CFLs:

DISCHARGE TUBES LAMPS – HID LAMPS - (HP – MV / SV / MH)

·         HID lights are usually only used for the low beams.

·         They are more efficient than regular incandescent bulbs (higher lumens/watt).

·         HID lights are also supposed to enable you to mimic daylight better than traditional incandescent lights BUT is definitely not comparable to LED.

·         HID lights do cause a lot of glare for oncoming traffic, especially when the ground is wet and the light reflects off the ground.

·         HID lights are VERY expensive to replace, the discharge tube has a limited life.

·         HID light dependence on Ignitor, Capacitor and Electromagnetic ballast is too much for its overall performance. However, they typically do last much, much longer than regular incandescent bulbs.

·         The heat generation is very very high thus the carbon emission.

·         The depreciation in the rated luminosity is very fast( within the very first year)

·         The restart of a HID lamp is delayed until its cooling.
